How Preimplantation Genetic Screening Helps in IVF
Preimplantation genetic screening or preimplantation genetic diagnosis, abbreviated as PGS and PGD, respectively, is employed during in vitro fertilsation procedures. As the name suggests, it is a method of testing the embryo’s genetic makeup to rule out any genetic disorders that may get passed down from the parents to the child.
This process of embryo genetic testing can help in detecting any genetic anomalies in the embryo so that it develops into a healthy foetus, leading to the birth of a healthy child. Some of the genetic disorders caused due to mutation in the genes, such as Kleinfelter’s syndrome and Down syndrome, can also be avoided with this method.
There are three kinds of pre genetic screening procedures, namely:
- PGTa
- PGTm
- PGTsr
Let’s take a look at each one of these embryo genetic screenings separately to understand what they do and how they help in the prevention of the implantation of a genetically weak embryo.
