Intrauterine insemination is especially helpful in cases of male infertility due to poor sperm quality, low sperm count, and motility. In the IUI treatment process, millions of healthy sperm are “picked up” using a needle from the male partner and directly deposited inside the uterus of the female partner, surpassing the vaginal cavity and cervical passageway. This helps in providing the sperm with a “head start” and accelerates the process of fertlisation,
It allows the sperm to save energy by skipping passing through the vagina and cervix of the female partner, which can later be used to swim further ahead to the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation takes place. It also facilitates the process by eliminating dead sperm and other debris from the semen. Once the sperm successfully fertilises the egg, a zygote is formed, which, in turn, goes through the divisional stages of development to transform into an embryo. The process is considered successful once the embryo has successfully implanted itself on the endometrial lining of the uterus by forming a placental connection.
