Hysteroscopic Surgery
Surgical hysteroscopy is an evaluative and corrective surgical procedure that provides insight into the internal cavity of the uterus to determine or rule out any possible reasons—such as scarring of the uterine wall, polyps, and fibroids, among others—for infertility in women. Not only does the procedure help fertility specialists determine the internal abornabilities, but it also allows for corrective measures to be taken.
Is Hysteroscopy a Minor Surgery?
Hysteroscopy operations are done in the outpatient department and do not involve any form of incision. The procedure begins with hyteroscopy dilation and cutterage of the cervix, which allows unobstructed access to the uterus for an accurate evaluation of the internal workings of the organ. Once dilated, a narrow tube, called a hysteroscope, is inserted and used to expand the cavity by releasing saline solution or carbon dioxide gas into the uterus. The uterine cavity is then assessed for the presence of any disformity, which is then corrected using other surgical tools.
Laparoscopic Surgery
In contrast to the hysteroscopic surgical procedure, the laparoscopy operation is aimed at analysing the external surroundings of the organs located in the pelvic region – namely the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Women with a history of pain in the pelvic region or other pelvic diseases are advised to undergo the diagnostic laparoscopy procedure to establish the cause of infertility, followed by its correction.
Laparoscopy vs. Open Surgery: Which is Better?
While open surgeries are extremely invasive in nature due to the involvement of large incisions, the laparoscopy procedure only employs minimal incisions in the abdominal region to carry out the treatment. This makes it a more preferred option over open surgeries. Laparoscopy tubectomy is also employed in sterilizing women who do not wish to have another child, as it leaves no room for scarring in the abdomibnal area along with other medical complications.
